Keruv (Interfaith)
Keruv Committee /(Interfaith)
Many congregants have asked members of the Keruv Committee just what Keruv means. Keruv (the Hebrew word means literally "bring closer") is an outreach movement designed to bring congregants and prospective congregants with non-Jewish spouses or relatives into our community with the congregation.
The Keruv committee at Congregation Beth Shalom has defined three leading goals: networking, fellowship, and support. We have been developing networking resources within the congregation for members who would like to talk with other members privately about matters like celebrating holidays, participating in rituals, and educating children in Judaism. In our recent past, we have embarked on a schedule of fellowship opportunities, including a Havdalah program and several Shabbatot (the plural of Shabbat) where discussions of interfaith issues have been shared. And we offer support to members who wish to meet as a group to discuss problems like the December dilemma and dealing with loss of loved ones.
The success of our local Keruv initiative depends on our responsiveness to your concerns. Our program has been well received by the Conservative Movement and for the past two years, we have hosted Rabbi Charles Simon, Director of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs and Chair of the National Keruv Committee along with many guests from across the nation to a weekend supporting the Keruv program.
