A Message From the President

Peter Burcat - President

On behalf of the members and families of Congregation Beth Shalom, I welcome you to our website.  As I enter this year, we are beginning our 90th Anniversary of being the only Conservative synagogue in New Castle County and the second oldest synagogue in Wilmington.  

When last I served you, the energy of the congregation was directed to the renovation of the building and to the Capital Campaign that financed the work.  The resulting building is more welcoming, more accessible, more efficient, and more adaptable.  It is also beautiful! 

Now, it seems that we need to "renovate" the way we function as a Board and as a Congregation.  We need to find ways: to be more welcoming to new members; to make our decision-making processes and the information on which they are based more accessible to our congregants; to develop more efficient and effective communication with our members; and to adapt our programs to the needs of our members.

To achieve these goals and to meet the needs of the congregation, I propose four areas of focus for the coming year:

  1. Welcoming Cantor Elisa and helping her be successful in her dual roles as Cantor and Education Director.
     
  2. Getting our financial house in order. 
     
  3. Creating an environment that is attractive to new members and "feels like family" to all of our members.
     
  4. Increasing "transparency" of our decision-making processes.
