About Beth Shalom

Congregation Beth Shalom was established in 1922 to provide the growing Wilmington Jewish Community with an alternative to the then existing Orthodox and Reform congregations. From the original five families, we have grown to over 450 families. We can state with pride that Beth Shalom members have continually taken leadership roles in all phases of Jewish communal life, as well as in the larger Jewish and general community.

We are affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and join with other area Conservative congregations to form the Mid-Atlantic District of Conservative Movement.

Our membership actively sustains the Jewish Theological Seminary. The Seminary in turn provides specific services as requested.

Our Mission: Congregation Beth Shalom is an egalitarian, Conservative synagogue committed to the worship of God, to the ideals and precepts of Torah, and to lifelong education. Congregation Beth Shalom is a welcoming Jewish community that promotes the observance of sacred times, the celebration of life cycle events, and acts of loving kindness. Congregation Beth Shalom is committed to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and the perpetuation of the State of Israel.

We offer:

Equal participation for both men and women in all phases of Synagogue life.
We are pleased to have both an active Sisterhood and Men’s Club.

Daily Morning Minyan services, Sunday through Friday.

A Framework for Excellence recognized Hebrew School which is staffed by teachers of the highest caliber who use the latest methods of education.

Adult Education groups include a Torah Study session on the portion of the week, Adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah Program, Hebrew Classes for Beginners, and a Sunday Brunch Series.

A monthly newsletter, the Kol Shalom, published to keep members informed
of ongoing activities. Members are encouraged to provide articles of interest to the general membership.

The most extensive Jewish Library in the State of Delaware. Members are invited to use the library for research projects, as well as reading and book loans.

Club 1801 provides a once-a-month Shabbat program for members in their 20s- and 30-somethings, as well as others in the community.

A Keruv (Outreach) Group to welcome and encourage participation in synagogue life of interfaith families.

A Chesed Network to help congregants and their families in time of need, hospitalization, or loss.
